The Wilton Singers Welcomes Its New Director -- Ron Drotos

Ron Drotos has been named director of the Wilton Singers. Some in town may already know him as the husband of Megan Friar (WHS class of 1981 and former WHS choir director). He is enthusiastically ready to begin this new chapter and says he is "really excited about working with the group. Their talent and creativity are absolutely amazing! I plan to keep the best of their existing repertoire -- which ranges from classical to Broadway and pop -- and add some jazz and a cappella arrangements."

He comes to the group with a rich and varied musical background. Ron's bachelor degree from UConn is in music composition with years of added instruction in jazz piano with such greats as Billy Taylor and Harold Danko. His freelancing has included composing, arranging, performing, producing and directing with ensembles such as the New York Pops and at hotel venues in such places as Atlantic City, the Catskills and the Poconos; a commission by the Unitarian Church in Westport; and being a featured jazz piano soloist in Chris Brubeck's "Waterworks." In musical theater he has been the orchestrator of the Princeton Triangle Club's Annual Show for the last 11 years and was involved with the Broadway productions of "Swinging on a Star," "Smokey Joe's Cafe" and "The Life."

He has accompanied many top vocalists including Julius LaRosa, Nell Carter, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Since 1999, one of his favorite assignments is faculty member of the Fairbanks (Alaska) Summer Arts Festival where he teaches classes in jazz and popular song performance as well as music theory.
